Lever won't turn to open barrel up.

I just bought a used Browning Citori 425 which was purchased new in 2001. It didn't have an owners manual, but got it on line. When I followed the directions to put the gun together, I now cannot open the barrels from the stock, the lever won't budge and I am afraid to push it too hard as it might damage my gun. It seems to lock into place alright when I put the gun together and the forarm on the barrel snapped into place but now I am lost on what to do? Can you help me?...
